Many traffic accidents are related to the driver's blind spots, especially with large trucks, which have larger and more numerous blind spots. So, what are these areas? And how can they be avoided? Learn more about vehicle blind spots below.

Vehicle blind spots

A vehicle blind spot is the area where the driver's vision is blocked by the vehicle's body when in the normal driving position. This area is shown in red in the image below.

Inner wheel discrepancy

Large vehicles create an "inner wheel discrepancy" when turning. This discrepancy refers to the difference between the turning radius of the front and rear inner wheels.

Due to this discrepancy, the front and rear wheels of large vehicles do not align when turning, creating a crescent shape, commonly known as the "death crescent."


 


Pedestrians or non-motor vehicles that stray into a blind spot are highly susceptible to accidents caused by the vehicle's inner wheel discrepancy when turning.

How to avoid blind spots?


01 Pedestrians and Non-motorized Vehicles

Pedestrians should maintain a safe distance of at least 2 meters from straight-moving motor vehicles.

Non-motorized vehicles should maintain a safe distance of at least 3 meters from straight-moving motor vehicles and should not pass close to the front of large vehicles.

 

02 Motor Vehicles

Slow down before turning and observe your surroundings. Drive carefully and slowly, avoid cutting in, maintain a low speed, and observe your surroundings carefully to ensure there are no dangerous factors before proceeding. This can help prevent such accidents to a certain extent.

When turning, make wide turns and maintain a safe distance from the sidewalk.

Install blind spot monitoring cameras to reduce blind spots and pay more attention while driving.

 

What is Blind Spot Monitoring?

 

It monitors the driver's blind spot in real time, accurately identifying pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles in the front, rear, left, and right blind spots. When a potential hazard is detected, the system issues a prompt alert, preventing accidents. Different levels of blind spot warning can be defined based on factors such as distance, allowing for flexible deployment of different blind spot detection algorithms for different vehicle types and environments.

 

Technical Principles of the Blind Spot Monitoring System (BSD):

A camera captures images within the blind spot, using visual odometry to calculate the risk range. The captured images are then processed and analyzed using technologies such as human detection and object recognition. If a vehicle or pedestrian is detected within the risk area, an alert is issued to the driver.
